I had developed a very painful back on a boating holiday. NHS offered ineffective painkillers and a diagnosis which turned out to be wrong. My medical insurers agreed to cover my treatment. Within a week I had seen the specialist at Sheffield, within two weeks I was in having the op. It was keyhole surgery. Because of my weight I had to be in special care overnight, there was some discomfort in my back but it wasn't really painful. The only problem which I didn't expect was being unable to urinate for several hours. This eventually cleared. After 3 or 4 days (can't remember exactly) I went home. I had to have someone stay with me for a week. There were no problems. The discomfort slowly went away and after 3 months I was as good as new. I'm careful about lifting heavy objects, but it's been over a year now and I've had no recurrence of the pain that I had before.
