Petros Mikalef: Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Spasticity Surgeon in Birmingham
Petros Mikalef is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Spasticity Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He completed Fellowship training in Hand Surgery and Spasticity Surgery in 2013. His classification system for surgical neurectomy has been internationally recognised and adopted.
Mr Mikalef has extensive experience in the surgical management of elective hand conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture, arthritis at the base of the thumb, trigger finger, and the removal of ganglions, neuromas and other soft tissue lumps. He serves as the Principal Investigator for the UNDER Study at his hospital.
Mr Mikalef's expertise extends to the interventional treatment of focal spasticity in both the upper and lower limb in adults. He has established multidisciplinary Upper and Lower Limb Spasticity Clinics at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and has significant experience in the surgical management of upper limb spasticity, as well as selective neurectomies for lower limb spasticity.
Mr Mikalef is actively involved in elective hand surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, a specialist regional centre for this field. He collaborates closely with the Centre for Peripheral Nerve Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. As a recognised tutor for the BSSH Hand Diploma, he is actively involved in training and education. His research focuses on standardising preoperative assessment and patient-reported outcome measures for spasticity treatment.
